What IS acne?

Have you ever wondered what is acne (a.k.a. pimples, zits, blemishes, bumps, etc.), exactly? If you have, you are not alone because it is still somewhat of a mystery to doctors too. Well, it is known what a pimple is, but the triggers and the many complexities of the condition are still not fully understood. Before we can talk about acne, we first have to cover the basic answers to the question of “what is acne?”. Simply, acne is the term for a condition where hair follicles (commonly known as pores) become clogged then lead to skin eruptions and inflammation. The body produces a natural oil called sebum, which is secreted from sebaceous glands in the pores of the skin. Dead skin cells and bacteria can block pores just below the skin’s surface. As the sebaceous glands continue to do their job, they will pump oil against these blockages. Acne then develops when these blockages rupture, causing sebum, bacteria, and white blood cells to collect under the skin.
