The “High-Tech” Reskin Towel

There is a new product out of Korea known as the Reskin towel. It is touted as being a high-tech way of effectively controlling acne. I have not physically held one of these towels, nor have I even seen one up close. But, from their literature, it seems this claim should probably be taken with a grain of salt. In particular, it seems that their claim of it being “high-tech science” may merely be that it is a reusable towel instead of a micro-scrubbing pad. Also, the fact that it is intended to be a physical face exfoliant… but is simultaneously intended for use with “vulnerable and sensitive skin” leads me to question the logic behind it. If they understand “vulnerable and sensitive” acne-prone skin, they would also understand that a face exfoliant that works chemically is a more appropriate option than a physical face exfoliant. With these things said though, it is perhaps unfair of me to judge so harshly without having any experience of the product. Hopefully people who have used it will share their opinions of how well it works in helping them to get clear skin. It would be interesting to hear some first-hand insight. Image credit: Frenkieb

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL — Jul 9 — India’s Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. (500359.BY) Thursday said it has voluntarily recalled a single lot of Sotret Isotretinoin capsules of 40 milligram strength from the U.S. market. In a statement, Ranbaxy said the recalled lot – No.1876846 – is within US Food and Drug Administration, or U.S. FDA, specifications and the company’s move was more due to “caution”. “This is a Class III recall, which signifies that the use of, or exposure to, the product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences,” Ranbaxy said in a statement, adding that the recall is being conducted “with the full knowledge of the U.S. FDA. CAAH Summary: A well-known drug used to treat resistant acne is being recalled by one of the major manufacturers of the generic version. The details behind why are somewhat vague, however, it is understood that this move was voluntary, and seemingly not at all a reaction to any customer situations or FDA issues. A side note about Accutane is that it has been linked to suicidal thoughts. Also, pregnant women have been cautioned against the drug due to links to birth defects.
Feb. 17, 2010 update: The article that this post formerly linked to is no longer active, and with this being a useful topic, it is worthwhile to provide an update as well as a new link. It has been rumoured that last year’s decision to take Accutane off of the shelves was also greatly influenced by a slew of personal injury lawsuits. This update isn’t only about the drug having been pulled, but also the recent ruling by a court in Atlantic City, New Jersey about injury it has caused. Roche is the company that first brought Accutane to market and the suit is against them. But just how last year, a generic manufacturer made a decision to step away from the drug, it is my guess that soon others will also stop producing this controversial acne drug. MEDICAL NEWS TODAY — Jun 23 — The muscle relaxer Botox has now been shown to positively affect the skin as well. “Botox definitely clears up acne,” says Anil Shah M.D. The Chicago plastic surgeon is one of the only doctors worldwide using Botox in an entirely new way. He injects the muscle relaxer directly into the skin to eliminate large pores, oil production, and acne breakouts. Acne is caused when the skin’s sebaceous glands release too much oil, or sebum, into the skin’s pores. Bacteria use the sebum as food, multiply, and cause the pore to became inflamed leading to formation of a pimple. “Botox,” says Dr. Shah, “stops the production of sebum and deprives those bacteria of food. For quite a while now, the muscle relaxer has been used as a beauty treatment for people concerned about fine lines and wrinkles. Only recently has it started to be looked at as a preemptive treatment for breakouts. Apparently, Botox affects the pores in a way that blocks oil production and makes the pores look smaller. The doctor interviewed for the article has recently published a study showing that Botox injected slightly below the skin’s surface lowers its oil production. This treatment is deemed unnecessary for younger sufferers.
