Stress and Acne: Could Meditation Help Your Skin?
Could meditation help with outbreaks? Maybe. It is known that stress is one of the leading causes of adult acne outbreaks. With this being the case, it is advisable to try and manage the stress of our lives as a way to help to keep acne at bay. So, why not try meditation as a way to help with a stressful time?
CNNhealth‘s mental health expert, Dr. Charles Raison, explains that “All the studies aren’t perfect, but there is more and more data suggesting that meditation is useful for reducing stress responses.” He also adds that “Too much stress puts wear and tear on your body and damages your health.”
The point to note is that, in addition to doing things like raising blood pressure (which can adversely affect the heart), stress also serves to suppress the immune system. You may have noticed that cold symptoms often arise at times of severe stress. This is because it is more likely for those under severe stress to become ill with colds and develop infections.
With the body less able to fight off infections, outbreaks also appear more easily. A red, swollen, irritating acne lesion is an infection. If your body is less able to fight infections, the healing time as well as the frequency of outbreaks, are both likely to increase.
Simple techniques like repeating a mantra, taking a minutes-long break during the day to quiet the mind, or watching your breathing could help. Obviously, a tool one person uses for relaxation is not one that every single person would find relaxing. In fact, yoga is a prime example of this. Many find the idea of twisting their bodies into new positions to be the complete opposite of a relaxing time.
Still, the point is that finding a way to relieve a bit of your day to day stress may help your body tremendously. If you can merely lower your heart rate and get your body slightly out of its inflammatory response to stress, this will do a lot to relax the wear being inflicted on it. If there is something heavy weighing down on your consciousness though, talking to someone who is qualified to help would be most effective at achieving this goal.
Again, it is important to note that intense stress is something worth consulting a medical professional about. Alternative medicine, instead of being the only treatment option, should be more a compliment to advice given by a doctor. With these things said, there is no reason why we should not try a breathing technique as we sit stuck in a stressful traffic jam for instance. We have all heard the Zen saying “Change comes from within.” Perhaps in the case of clear skin, we can also achieve change – from within.

I have fair, oily, acne prone skin.
I purchased the Made from Earth Rooibos Face Scrub just to try it; to see if I'm missing anything. I'm sorry I didn't have the guts to try it sooner.

It is absolutely fantastic. I had a couple of breakouts I could not, for the life of me, get rid of. I put on the Made from Earth scrub – with a cotton ball – and I did wait 4 minutes. It tingled, but did not burn in any way. I washed it off and thought "okay, no miracles here". My face did feel smoother but that's about it.
The next two days, I kept using the product and I noticed quite the improvement. My chin cleared up and my face was, again, smoother, and more even and most importantly, no breakouts. I did not need to even put on powder (which I did not live without).
You dont have to use a moisturizer after it – unless you have really dry skin – my skin however, did not need an additional moisturizer which i think also helped get rid of the acne I had. Highly recommendend if you are looking to remove your acne!
Hello Taylor,
Wow, that's great news. It's always lovely to hear of products that produce remarkable results in the health of your skin. I had not heard of Made from Earth as a brand before your post, but I see that they provide organic and holistic products. This company's philosophy is aligned with what I try to do here at CAAH – help folks improve their skin at home using products that are as gentle to the skin as possible. Natural ingredients can be used to help achieve that goal.
With these things said, I've contacted the company about getting their products into the hands of CAAH readers. Be on the lookout for the details of a discount code and free product offer. So Taylor, the good news is that your next order of their Earth Rooibos Face Scrub will be a bit cheaper than your last.
