Makeup is intended to stay put, so naturally, makeup removal can be a tricky task (especially around the eye area). And since skin irritation can easily lead to a breakout, finding gentle ways to remove makeup is particularly useful for folks with acne prone skin.
The effort to remove waterproof mascara or a thick layer of foundation can prompt a hard scrub or the use of stronger detergents. Harsh daily scrubbing and strong detergents daily can be particularly irritating to the skin and is likely to strip skin of the natural oils it needs in order to remain healthy.
There are people who wear HEAVY makeup on a very regular basis, either for the love of makeup or for work (i.e. – models, drag queens, makeup enthusiasts, performers, etc.). Due to the frequency of use, and the amount of application, it seemed quite fitting to point at strategies that these people use to simultaneously be gentle to their skin while effectively removing makeup residue.
Makeup Removal Wipes
There is one simple point – use products specially formulated to remove makeup. Within this category, you have two main sections: makeup wipes and makeup remover liquids. A makeup wipe behaves similar to a face cloth, only makeup wipes have the cleanser already on them. With makeup remover liquids, you would need to use cotton pads as well.
The illustrative videos below were chosen to help with the visuals of all of this. They are great how-tos but they do leave out important points. Two points that should be added to the things noted in the videos are:
it is a good idea to follow either the makeup wipes or the cotton pad removal with a rinse (to wash away the detergent – even though it is mild, it is still a detergent afterall) and
follow everything with a moisturizer to help condition your skin.
A toner is optional if you feel that you need to be more thorough in the removal. And if you do opt to use a toner to help ensure the last bits of makeup are removed, still use a moisturizer afterward to help maintain moisture.
Hey, chime in on your effective techniques for gently removing makeup! Since there’s no one perfect way, it would be great to hear what your experiences and practices are.
